Let’s ‘Play to Learn’
- The bowler rolls a ball towards the batter who pushes/steers the ball into a space and then runs to a spot/marker and back to the batting spot
- The fielder collects the ball and rolls/throws it underarm to the bowler who catches/collects the ball and tells the batter to stop running
- The children swap roles after three or four goes
Safety & Organisation
Ensure:
- the surface is clean and free from obstructions
- children play in threes, taking turns to play the role of the batter, bowler, and fielder
- children play in a garden with three throw-down markers/spots
- children keep the ball in their ‘garden’
Opportunities to

Can you see the child?
- Practising a variety of ways of receiving a ball/object
- Taking part in co-operative play in a small group
- Demonstrating care and respect for other children
-
Most of the time
Encourage the:
- child to explore catching a range of objects
- child to kick the ball into a space instead of pushing it with a bat
- bowler to catch the ball in a range of positions, such as sitting/kneeling/standing, etc.
- children to develop a simple scoring system for all players
- batter to run over longer distances and over different routes
-
Sometimes
Encourage the child to:
- explore using a range of balls / bean bags to find which one they are most successful with
- use an object to help them catch/trap the ball, e.g. a box
- discuss which objects might be easiest to catch
- discuss the fact that nobody makes mistakes on purpose and that everyone is trying their hardest – the children need to help and encourage one another
- practise skills using the Technical Skills Cards
Help the child to collect/throw/roll/catch the ball / bean bag
